Mary has been involved with the Leading Aspect Award since its start.

She has a long history of working in education. She started teaching in the West Midlands and then moved to ILEA, inner London. She has been an LA inspector/ adviser for over 20 years in 3 LAs, and an OFSTED inspector for over 10 years, but recently retired from Islington where she was a member of the senior management team.
Mary still works part-time, at the University of East London, where she trains teachers and teaches chemistry to trainee science teachers. She set up the Chemistry Enhancement Course at UEL.
During her long career she has also been
. Practising School Improvement Partner (SIP) in secondary phase
. Principal co-coordinating Inspector, senior inspector/ adviser, school improvement officer (SIO) and project manager.
. Actively involved in Training and consultancy for schools in the UK e.g.
. School evaluation and improvement - including developing and implementing procedures, and monitoring and evaluation of work; reporting to funders
. Team development and leadership and line management of L(E)A advisory staff,
. Support to governors and heads' performance management.
. Project manager - Bidding for project funds and implementing major government initiatives e.g. EIC; set up a CLC; helped established Lead Department Award and Leading Aspect Award with other LAs.

Other:
. Mary gained a PhD and BSc in chemistry, did teacher training.
. Passionate about girls' education - in the widest sense - she has run Brownies for too long and been actively involved in other out of school initiatives, including Girls into Science.
. Mary believes that good teacher are good learners and so over the years she has delved into other areas, including industrial archaeology, hat making, Spanish, accounting and counselling.
